La Frontera and the West
Jay will cover two topics in this presentation. One will describe his 1985 collaboration with Alan Weisman, producing the book, La Frontera: the United States Border with Mexico. The second will cover Jay’s lifelong project photographing working cowboys. He’ll share images and stories collected during a lifetime of immersion in photography.
Considered as one of the most influential photographers in the West, Jay Dusard is a master of both the landscape and portrait genres. Jay was awarded a 1981 Guggenheim Fellowship to do view camera portraits of working cowboys, buckaroos, and vaqueros from Canada to Mexico. A fine black-and-white darkroom printer, he is now collaborating with Carlos Mandelaveitia, of TruRes in Scottsdale, making monumental-size inkjet prints of his cowboy portraits, panoramic landscapes, and abstractions. His solo publications include The North American Cowboy: A Portrait (1983), Open Country (1994), and The California Vaquero (2005 portfolio). Between trips to photograph and teach workshops, Jay punches cows, plays jazz cornet, and shares life with his wife Kathie.
Jay will also be teaching a workshop on Sunday.
Return to the main Symposium Schedule.
