Shooting the West XXIV — Shows & Contests
Give it Your Best Shot RANGE Outback RoundUp
Sam Hipkins presents Give it Your Best Shot Winners

Give It Your Best Shot is both a juried show (with awards) and “just” a show, giving participants an opportunity to present their work to the public. You are invited to enter a maximum of two prints, which will be hung in our huge display space in the East Hall of the Convention Center. We’re talking about a lot of prints; every year we receive around two hundred entries. It makes for a beautiful and interesting show!

The symposium presenters choose their two favorite prints, the Speaker’s Choice and Merit Awards. Participants also vote for their favorite print, the People’s Choice Award. We’ll end Saturday afternoon with the awards presentation in the West Hall. Then we’ll move over to the East Hall for our big Give It Your Best Shot Reception to send the event out with a bang on Saturday evening.

Entry Details:

  • must be enrolled in symposium to submit prints
  • maximum 2 prints per person
  • entry fee is $5.00 per print
  • mat size is limited to 30” (longest dimension excluding frame)
  • prints must be framed, wired and ready to hang
  • your name MUST NOT BE VISIBLE on the print ◊ if you have signed the print or mat it must be covered so that it is not visible

Viewing Entries

  • We now have extended hours in the East Hall both for viewing the show and submitting prints. See complete schedule for details.

RANGE sponsors this contest, which could launch your career and lead to fame and fortune (you just need to redefine fame and fortune). Winners are announced and shown at Shooting the West, and published in RANGE magazine. Winning images are often subsequently used in the Real Buckaroo Calendar, to illustrate feature articles in RANGE magazine, and for advertising future contests. This is a great opportunity to get your images into the public eye, and learn about the intricacies of the publishing market.

Contest Rules: All rules must be followed and a completed, signed entry form submitted. One photographer per packet and maximum 5 images per person.

Entry Fee: $5.00 per image.

Content: All photos must be of the people, places and critters of America’s rangelands. Color or black & white. Amateur or professional. Entries must be submitted digitally either on CD/DVD disc or USB thumb drive. Media will NOT be returned but will be secured at RANGE offices or destroyed.

Technical Guidelines:

  • Image format must be JPEG.
  • Label each image with your phone number and numeral 1-5, like this—775-555- 1212-3. Last numeral should match number you write on caption (on a separate sheet). DO NOT PUT NAMES OR DATES IN FILE NAME OR IMAGE.
  • No cloning of physical objects or major shifts in color or tonalities — that means no removing telephone poles or adding border collies! Subtle color correction, con- trast adjustment, conversion to b&w, and removal of dust spots is allowed.
  • Image Preparation: Depends on your skill level. Any hi-res JPEG is fine. If you have more expertise, you may want to perform these additional steps: Set the color profile to sRGB. Set the image size to 1024 wide (max) by 768 high (max) with the “Constrain Proportions” and “Resample” checkboxes checked and “Bicubic” chosen as the resampling algorithm.

Permission: Contestants must grant RANGE magazine permission to use entries for possible use in magazines and calendars, and for other contest publicity. Calendar, book, or magazine use (with other feature stories), earns extra money.
