Photographing the Working Cowboy
At launch, we have not yet worked out all details of this workshop. However, we do know one thing for sure. It’s going to be taught by the king… the master… the all time grand patriarch photographer of buckaroos and western culture, Mr. Jay Dusard. That should be enough to get you to sign up. If you need more, there will also be buckaroos and horses and ropes and spouses and dogs and tooled leather. It will be held in that great filtered light in the warm up arena at the Winnemucca Events Complex. If that’s still not enough information, check back for updates or give us a call. Workshop Instructor
Jay Dusard is truly an American master. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1981, at a time when few photographers had yet received them. The project involved photographing cowboys, vaqueros, and buckaroos with a large format camera, from Canada to Mexico. His solo publications include The North American Cowboy: A Portrait (1983), Open Country (1994), and The California Vaquero (2005 portfolio).
Jay is also a master black & white darkroom printer. He is now collaborating with Carlos Mandelaveitia, of TruRes in Scottsdale, on the making of monumental-size archival inkjet prints of his cowboy portraits, panoramic landscapes, and rarely seen abstractions.
Jay lives with his wife, Kathie, near Douglas, Arizona. Between trips to photograph and teach workshops, he punches cows and plays jazz cornet. His work may be seen at www.jaydusard.com and www.tinysatellitepress.com.
